Yes.

Proverbs 19:16

He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.

The death of the soul is more in line with God's mercy towards even the unsaved. And yet the opponent ( who generally prefers the word  "annihilation" for the full effect) would rather the unsaved to suffer for an eternity in a place of fiery flames and torture.

can a man save someone? there are situations where yes a man can be saved from death dealing situations . falling through ice is a death dealing situation . likely will  require some one to act as a savior

regardless of what people think or feel it ultimately depends on what the judge determines.Matthew 7:23.  "Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'". 

those called the evildoers do know of Jesus Matthew 24:5 says, "For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah,' and will deceive many"
