2.) Mother of Harlots is another DESCRIPTOR, because FALSE RELIGION is the original Harlotry. 

3.) Abominations of the Earth also DESCRIBES who this Harlot is. God HATES all FALSE RELIGION.

So, God is telling us that the Harlot (False Religion) who rides the back of these [Government] Beast Kingdoms in that they all had false religions interspersed amongst them, are both going to be judged. God will use the Anti-Christ and his 10 (E.U.) kings to kill off False Religion, in that he demands to be worshiped as the only god. Thus they kill her and burn her with fire, simply meaning the forbid all religions except Beast Worship, and anyone who refuses to worship the Beast they will kill. She has the blood of the Saints (Jews throughout all history) and the blood of the Martyrs of Jesus (Christians) so False Religion covers all time on earth, and is in every nation on this earth, thus the MANY WATERS verse. The Scarlet and Purple verses is another clue it has nothing to do with the RCC because it represents GOVERNMENTS & RELIGIOUS ORDERS. Those two colors were very hard to create and thus very expensive, one came from a small rare bug and the other from seeds of a shrub in Egypt, thus common men did not wear these colors, only Gov. Royals or Religious Orders. Thus the Woman rides the Beasts back. (False Religion & Governments were co-mingled)

What is Rev. 18 about then? That is the WHOLE WORLD (Babylon under Stan's Dark rule over mankind) is being Judged by God. NOTICE in vs. 2 Babylon (World) has become a HABITATION of Devils, and......Satan gets cast down at the midway point pf the 70th week, AND Apollyon and his demon hordes are released at the 1st Woe !! Then in vs. 4 we see God says "Come out of her (Babylon/World) my people (Israel who repent) lest you partake in her sins and her plagues". This is God telling us about the 1/3 who repent and flee into the Petra/Bozrah area.

In Rev. 18:8 and 10 God says Babylon will be Destroyed in ONE DAY and in ONE HOR, we both mean 42 months. The Day of the Lord lasts 42 months. And as we see in Rev. 17:12 the 10 Kings rule ONE HOUR with the Beast or 42 months. This is not ONE CITY being Judged, its the whole world being Judged by God. 

 

In spite of all that is written about Babylon as the center of world trade of every commodity imaginable?

Let's just focus on the idea Babylon is a city that will exist, or already does, that controls world trade at the end of the age.

It's quite clear Babylon in Rev 18 is a physical city AND the seat of demonic behavior and deception.

Yes, it is the whole world who followed after Satan's Lies, Greed, look at the world today, promoting homosexuality with rainbow colors on sports teams, for filthy moneys sake etc. There is a reason Babylon was used, God is all knowing, He wrote the book of Revelation in a way which we could later read this great book, if it had been written saying Rome or THE WHOLE WORLD would be judged and destroyed, then Rome would have seen that is treason because they saw themselves as rulers of the whole world, so they would have placed anyone with those letters/holy word in prison. Babylon will never be a city again unless God's word is in error, thus why use Babylon, well I showed why God used Babylon as a catch all for this whole world being judged.

The World burns, 1/3 of its trees meaning 1/3 of the world burns, nit ONE CITY brother), saying, What city is like unto this great city!

(God judges the World and avenges the deaths of EVERYONE, not just men killed by Babylon)

22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;

23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee(The Church is in Heaven with Jesus the Bridegroom for 7 years, we ARE NOT on Earth for this Great Wrath on All of Mankind): for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived(By Satan's DECEPTION over mankind).

24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

How can the blood of ALL THE SAINTS and PROPHETS be on Babylon's hands? Because Babylon is Satan's Dark Kingdom of CONFUSION over Mankind.

And by the way, I understood this about 8-10 years ago in full because the Lord rebuked a blog I was writing saying that THAT CITY in Rev. 17:18 was Rome, and showed me who Babylon was at the same time, its in plain sight and we miss it, in ONE VERSE (2 passages really) God tells us who He sees Babylon the Great as.

Rev. 16:19 And the great city was divided into three parts(Jerusalem/Earthquake/2nd Coming of Jesus), and the cities of the nations fell:(Jesus SPEAKS VICTORY) and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

Now we jus need to see WHO Jesus/God defeats at Armageddon right? It's too easy.

Rev. 16:12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

So, God tells us Jesus in Revelation 16:19 defeats Babylon the Great THEN He describes them as the Kings of the WHOLE EARTH in the 6th Vial. 

I do not just guess brother. I call Babylon the WHOLE WORLD because God calls it that.

The world powers of the prophecies found in Daniel all ruled from Babylon.

Simple. The ones who control the world banking system. They're an elite untouchable group of people that really hate us, and wish to see our destruction, particularly European stock. They control everything, from politicians to media to entertainment. They have created a " Babylonian society"( which is where these people and their teachings originate) that we live in. If you don't mind my take on this, but even mighty Rome is subject to these people. Rome doesn't control our financial institutions that make this world go round, that bring us into wars  (playing both sides), that lead us into depressions and famines, that advocate antichrist values like LGBTQ and abortion ( which they proudly consider a fundamental right) and fill our minds with perverted filth from the music and film industry.

Yes. And we should pray and endeavor to find the truth of that message. That's why we're Christians. In other words, the world is starting to get a little uncomfortable with what they're seeing, not having the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Believers not only understand what is happening but WHY. 

If we have complete trust in God's word,  we can see what God is saying and relate it to what is going on around us. Any verse we study adds to what the Holy Spirit has taught us, and eventually we are led to truth. 

It has only been a few years now  where we collectively (along with the unsaved) have really begin to notice the source of the evil, although they have deceived many countries before throughout history, but we never hear about that  (because of our media). 

You have to realize that Satan has always needed a core group of "disciples" throughout time to accomplish his goal (of  being worshipped as God in Jerusalem). In order to get the whole world in lock step, you have to control their governments, mainly through finance. Unbelievers will do anything for prosperity. We got to see real quickly how " Christian" George W Bush and Mike Pence were, for example.

Babylon is Satan's Fourth kingdom, the new world order. A Babylonian world society where Christians are the main targets.

I question the teaching of Christ reigning from the " Jerusalem which now is"....

11 And the merchants of the earth(EARTH not Babylon, Babylon is Satan's DARK Kingdom over Mankind and he rules the WHOLE WORLD as Luke 4 tells us) shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:(The world is ablaze, men are hiding in caves, there of course is no trade going on anymore as verses 11-15 shows us over and over) 12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble. 13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men. 14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.

15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her(by following THE WORLDS WICKED WAYS, will look on stunned and fearful of JUDGMENT), shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,

16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city(The whole world is being Judged, not ONE CITY, we intuitively KNOW THIS, yet we take verses out of context or fail to see why words needed to be used), that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!

17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought(the World is Judged in 42 months, not one hour, it is merely a code that can be understood by reading Rev. 17:12). And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, 18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning(What burns? The World burns, 1/3 of its trees meaning 1/3 of the world burns, nit ONE CITY brother), saying, What city is like unto this great city!

19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city(Their world which made them rich is destroyed, the LOVED this Evil World more than they loved God), wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her. 21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. (God judges the World and avenges the deaths of EVERYONE, not just men killed by Babylon)

22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;

23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee(The Church is in Heaven with Jesus the Bridegroom for 7 years, we ARE NOT on Earth for this Great Wrath on All of Mankind): for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived(By Satan's DECEPTION over mankind).

24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

How can the blood of ALL THE SAINTS and PROPHETS be on Babylon's hands? Because Babylon is Satan's Dark Kingdom of CONFUSION over Mankind. 

I agree when you say "Because Babylon is Satan's Dark Kingdom of CONFUSION over Mankind."

However, Could it be possible that the  "one third" could be figurative and not literal? Like in: 

Zechariah 13:8-9

[LAnd it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

[9]And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

Here we have an illustration of God's people being "tried with fire", so to speak. Certainly this is not a literal statement. 

I always stress that because the book of revelation is highly allegorical or figurative ( spiritual) in nature, a lot of us go down that path of trying to conclude some sort of literal sense to something when certain numbers can be much easier understood in a figurative sense.
