1 Samuel 17:20

20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

David's occupation of being a Keeper of Sheep has a bearing on his Victory over Goliath. Abel is a Keeper of Sheep.

Know your weapons...

A few years ago some people I ran across decided to see how that sling David used would stand up against todays weapons.

Very long story short and bypassing a whole bunch of numbers it was found that the actual knockdown power of the sling David used was equal to a 45 Cal. automatic handgun.   Shocked us all.    And it was discovered that with someone of David's capabilities at 75 yards probably more accurate.

In spiritual warfare the main thing that one needs to know is that as humans we do not have any authority or power in the Spirit World.   If you are going to fight in that arena one must depend on what does.   The Hoy Spirit should be the driving force in your weapons on that Battlefield.   So the things that you would want to build up is whatever will build and strengthen ties to the Holy Spirit.   Faith, Trust and how you live your life.

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

1 Samuel 16:12

12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

Ruddy = Red

Esau came out Red.

Given that Ruddy/Red is a common characteristic of Esau and David, why is Esau rejected and David accepted by Elohim/God?

because ruddy and red didn't have anything to do with it. God knew their hearts in the womb and it was their heart's relationship with him that caused the rejection of Esau.  It wasn't just giving up his birthright that was the problem, it was the base cause of that in that God wasn't that important to him.

With David, his heart was for God even though he was a terrible sinner in dealing with his desires for beauty.

Given that Ruddy/Red is a common characteristic of Esau and David, why is Esau rejected and David accepted by Elohim/God?

Esau, ruddy in color, was rejected because he despised the birthright.  The birthright was the right given to the oldest son to bear the responsibility of the family and even an extended family.  It was hard work and much obligation to duty was required.

Esau didn't give two hoots nor a holler about that.  The Bible says he, in fact, despised it.

But when it came time for the perks of the birthright, which was the blessings, he wanted THAT!  But it was too late.

David, ruddy in color, was the complete opposite. Even as an older boy, he was the ONLY one the Bible states that was offended enough by the blasphemies of Goliath against God and against God's people to do something about it.

King Saul just sat under a tree and his army was basically leaderless and frightened.

No man was taking up the hard job of the duty of the Jewish army to attack Goliath for his foul mouth against God and God's people.

King Saul and his men [because of King Saul] were all acting like Esau.

David, with his sling shot, stepped up to defend the God of his faith.

Both men, Esau and David were ruddy.  The two men could not be any more opposite in nature.

1) Do you agree that the problem with the Whole World is that they don't want to give up Esau?

2) Does David Conquer his desire for beauty in the journey to Elohim/God? If yes, do you have Scriptures that support this?

1 Samuel 17:9

9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

Therefore, how do you measure that you are David or Esau? How did David attain a Heart towards Elohim/God? Are you doing the same as David to be counted on Elohim's/God's side in the Battle/War?

Personally, I think two of the most critical verses in the whole account are 1 Samuel 16:11 and 1 Samuel 17:40. The first tells us the young David was considered a relative nobody and when it comes to things like battles and kings most people haven't a clue what God thinks or purposes. As the youngest of many brothers he wasn't summoned for consideration of Samuel's blessing. Sheep herding is amongst the lowest of jobs in that culture but it was a job God used to prepare David for everything else in his life. The second verse cited tells us David has extraordinary faith because as we read through the scriptures we discover Goliath had four brothers. Because of the rules allowing next of kin to seek retribution David was prepared to kill all five brothers, not just one giant. David had been mocked by his brothers, by the other soldiers and even the king who was more concerned about managing a lazy army than killing Philistines. He was a diminutive man physically; so small in physical stature Saul's armor could not be secured on his body (Saul likely knew it would not before he ever offered it).

The story could be read as one of machismo but I read it as an account of one man who's faith in God was extraordinary. Slings were very common in David's day. They were the poor king's alternative to the bow and arrow and sling-throwers were well-trained and could be very accurate. other one is completely correct: that stone bore the force of a .45 caliber bullet. Modern day hunters all know that small caliber handgun rounds do not penetrate the skull of a bear. David killed bears with rocks. Once a person has done that he learns something about himself and those lessons become solidified with confidence each time another bear is struck dead with a rock slung from a sling.

But David does not couch his resolve in his skill with the sling.

1 Samuel 17:34-37
But David said to Saul, "Your servant was tending his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock, I went out after him and attacked him, and rescued it from his mouth; and when he rose up against me, I seized him by his beard and struck him and killed him.  "Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has taunted the armies of the living God." And David said, "The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine."

David went out to kill ALL the giants, one rock a piece, trusting in God for deliverance.

Too bad David did not maintain that confidence and resolve until the end. The giants of hubris, lust and murder overtook him in the end. God remained faithful to David even when David was not faithful to God.

And what a marvelous lesson this is for all in Christ and those who are drawn.

Spiritual warfare

Forgot to mention something very critical: it happens in time and space. It is NOT all "spiritual." The rock was physical. The sling was physical. The skull of Goliath was physical. Both the sword and the severed head were physical.

All of it was part of a history recounting the means by which God would enter the world in human likeness and redeem us from sin. David killed one giant, came prepared to kill them all, and in so doing freed all of Israel for a time. Christ came, killed a giant and all its siblings, and freed all God's children for all eternity.

In time and space.

An excellent observation and connect to the nebulous dispentional view of the Kingdom being less than victorious.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
