He had been a professing Christian, but left the church, when he reverted to his old ways. Many unbelievers are offended by the gospel, which is what Jesus told us would happen. They are hostile towards God and love their sin. This sin is no exception. The right to tell people about the law they've broken and the gospel message, comes from the Lord. You would on learning they are not married would knock on their door and rebuke them for living in sin, exhort them to separate, live apart untill they are married. Is that what you would do? How would your neighbour react? Do you really soft anyone in your area to have any respect for you or be willing to listen to you after such a disrespectful act? Our example is Jesus he was always approachable. The only time you heard him using harsh words is too those who are so self righteous that they believed they had no need of a saviour. Look at how Jesus dealt with sinners who came to him and that is the point, they came to him. How many sinners would come to church today? How welcoming are we to the unusual, the odd person who isn't nicely dressed. Just because we have a right does not mean we ram it down someone throat. They are for Christians. Church meetings are not for evangelism, they are for worshipping the Lord, teaching/preaching the Bible and building up the people of God. An unbeliever might come into a service, and what we say and do should be led by the Holy Spirit and in accord with God's word, so that we give a good witness; but evangelism is for going out amongst the world, not for when we gather together as a congregation. We should welcome people, not based on how they are dressed, that is certain. Not so well dressed people should be welcomed just the same as well dressed ones. A bruised reed or a smouldering flax is a damaged or weak believer, not an unbeliever, who is currently dead in trespasses and sins. Hmm ...
