I grew up seeing people doing that in real life and on television, so I started doing it as well. It wasn't until recently when I started to wonder why everyone under a Christian faith doesn't do it. After doing some research, the only answer I could come up with is "because Catholics do it". I also read that not ALL Protestants fall under this category, but it did seem like a majority of them do. Is this truly the only reason why? Now, I don't want people thinking I do this as a way of showing everyone around me that "he's religious" or "look at that guy praying". I do this under my own roof and inside the church along with 3-4 hundred other people also praying. Excuse me for my ignorance, but that is why I come here. To ask questions and to learn. Why should we? Seriously.

If you want to show respect for what He did for us, it would seem better to feed the poor, visit those in prison, or clothe the naked. And spread the Gospel far and wide. The cross represents death - not protection, not a blessing, not a charm, etc. Jesus said to, "Take up your cross daily," which means to die to yourself. When a person crosses themselves or when a priest crosses people, are any of you thinking, "I am dying to my flesh"?
